How to Inspect Your Roof While Staying on the Ground

roof inspection

In the South, we experience lots of storms that include heavy rain, some hail, and also high winds. Although weather can create havoc and is a fact of life, you can stave off damage to your home and property with strategic planning and some preparation. This will help ensure you and your property stay in good condition when bad weather hits. Of course, you’ll still need to do a thorough roof inspection after a storm. Here are some tips that will help you. The main thing is to try to stay OFF your roof.  Let a pro do the climbing.

Roof Inspection – What to Look for After Bad Weather

Look In Your Attic

We know that roof damage can typically be seen from the outside, there are other places to look that you may not have thought of. Get a flashlight and go into your attic. Hopefully, you’ve got some nice steps that will lead you right up there without too much trouble.  First, check the decking, which is the plywood underneath the shingles. Look for signs where the deck might be drooping or look for any indications of wetness or spots that are damp on the surface area of the wood; these could be telltale signs if a problem. If you see dark areas and perhaps tracks on the deck these also may be indications of water leakage. Turn off the flashlight and check to see if there is any light coming through the decking– this could mean there are significant holes in the roofing.

Look at the Color of Your Shingles and Check for Any Shingles that are Missing

Now that you’ve completed your attic inspection, let’s go outside and see what we might find. Take a quick walk around the house and check the color of the shingles.  It should be consistent. But, if you see areas that are darker or even black in color, it probably means that the granules on your shingles have been washed away. When the shingles are exposed in that way, the asphalt will dry out and crack in the sunshine.  This, of course, could also lead to leaks.

While you’re looking for any color changes, be sure to also look for any missing shingles. If you’ve had wind or heavy rain that caused shingles to be blown away, this will definitely need to be addressed quickly. Even if the shingles are not completely blown off, loose, twisted or otherwise damaged shingles will also need to be replaced as soon as possible by a certified Georgia roofer.

Although you may do a ground inspection (and you should), chances are you cannot see everything from the ground that may need repair. According to roofing professionals, if you see any curled, bent or ripped flashing around the chimney, pipeline vents or other roofing extrusions, it suggests damage and a potential leak. All flashing and seals need to be in great condition for the health of your roofing system and the protection of your home and personal property.

Gutter issues

The gutters on your house play an essential role in keeping your roof leak-free.  However, gutters can quickly be damaged during a storm. Walk around your home one more time, and specifically, look at the gutters and downspouts. If a downspout is damaged, have it repaired quickly. Look for any broken or damaged gutters and downspouts, and you’ll be doing yourself a big favor. A damaged gutter system can lead to much bigger problems.  Don’t risk it!
